What justifies the price difference of almost €500?
With the APC Stabilized 42 ED, Kite Optics brings a new top-tier version of its most popular image-stabilized binocular to market. Anyone who already knows or owns the APC 42 will inevitably ask: what do I get for nearly €500 more – and is it worth it?
Let’s look at both binoculars side by side.
What they have in common
Both binoculars share the core philosophy of the APC program: compact 42 mm design, hand-held image stabilization, long battery life and a 30-year warranty. Both are waterproof to IPX 7, nitrogen-filled and rated for temperatures from −20°C to +55°C. Both can be used reliably at high magnifications without a tripod – that is the heart of the APC concept.
The differences in detail
1. Optics – the decisive step
This is the most important difference. The APC 42 uses a high-quality standard optical system; the APC 42 ED adds ED lenses (Extra-low Dispersion). This lens category is well established in top-tier conventional binoculars and significantly reduces chromatic aberration – the color fringing that can appear at high magnifications and in high-contrast situations, such as birds against a bright sky.
The result with the APC 42 ED: sharper edges, more natural colors and an overall more homogeneous image across the entire field of view. Those who frequently observe in difficult light or at high magnification will notice the difference clearly.
2. Stabilization angle – from 2° to 3°
The APC 42 already delivers exceptional image steadiness with a 2° stabilization angle. The APC 42 ED goes further: 3° means that even stronger external influences – more severe hand tremor, rougher seas, stronger wind – are fully compensated. In practice, this is most noticeable at 16x and 20x magnification, where even the smallest movements would otherwise have a significant impact on the image.
3. New generation: KDGS-2 and KT 3.0 with SMARTFLOW
The APC 42 uses the KDGS-1 gimbal system and KT 2.0 processor. The APC 42 ED brings the next generation: KDGS-2 and KT 3.0, complemented by the SMARTFLOW algorithm. This adapts stabilization dynamically to the situation – a steady image during static observation, fluid compensation during panning. The overall result is a more natural, more comfortable observation experience.
4. Magnification options – now including 20x
The APC 42 is available in 12x and 16x. The APC 42 ED extends the range with a third option: 20x magnification in a 42 mm binocular, hand-held and fully stabilized. This is a combination that simply did not exist before. For observers who regularly work at long range and want to avoid a tripod, the APC 42 ED 20x opens up an entirely new possibility.
5. Close focus distance – significantly improved
The APC 42 focuses from 4 metres. The APC 42 ED achieves focus from just 2.9 metres – a difference that is noticeable when observing insects, plants or birds in dense vegetation at short range.
6. Power supply – hybrid solution with USB-C
The APC 42 runs on two AA batteries and includes a spare battery compartment. The APC 42 ED goes a step further: it combines AAA batteries (alkaline or lithium) with included USB-C rechargeable Li-Ion batteries. Runtime remains the same at up to 120 hours, but flexibility increases – in the field, standard batteries are always available; at home, the included rechargeable batteries charge conveniently via USB-C.
7. Field of view – surprisingly wider
Despite higher optical quality and new technology, the APC 42 ED also offers a wider field of view: the 12×42 ED reaches 76 metres at 1,000 metres compared to 67 metres for the APC 42 12x. The 16×42 ED achieves 73 metres versus 68 metres for the APC 42 16x. A wider field of view makes it easier to locate subjects and creates a more immersive, spacious observation experience.

Which model is right for whom?
The APC 42 is and remains an excellent binocular. Anyone looking for a compact, reliable and very well stabilized binocular who does not place ED optics at the top of their priority list is extremely well served by it. It remains one of the best options in its class.
The APC 42 ED is aimed at observers who want to get the absolute most out of a 42 mm binocular: better optics, stronger stabilization, more magnification options, a shorter close focus distance and the latest processor technology. The price difference of nearly €500 is significant – but it is justified by concrete, measurable improvements in virtually every category.
Those who frequently observe in low light, regularly work at very long range, or see 20x magnification as a genuine option will view the premium as a worthwhile investment.
